Patching Drywall: Small Holes to Large Repairs
Drywall damage is one of the most common issues homeowners deal with. Whether it's nail holes from hanging pictures, doorknob dents, or a larger hole from an accident, the good news is that drywall is very repairable. Here at Wultsch Remodeling, we patch drywall almost every week for homeowners across the Greensburg area.
Small Holes (Nail and Screw Holes)
For tiny holes, all you need is a small amount of lightweight spackle and a putty knife. Apply the spackle, let it dry, sand it smooth, and touch up with matching paint. This is an easy weekend DIY task.
Medium Holes (Fist-Sized)
For holes up to about 6 inches, you'll need a drywall patch kit. These include a self-adhesive mesh patch that goes over the hole. Apply joint compound over the mesh in thin layers, letting each layer dry before sanding and adding the next. Feather the edges out wide so the patch blends in.
Large Holes and Damage
For anything bigger than 6 inches, or for damage that includes crumbling or water-damaged drywall, you'll want to cut out the damaged section and install a new piece of drywall. This requires measuring, cutting, securing the new piece to studs or backing, taping the seams, and applying multiple coats of joint compound.
The Tricky Part: Matching the Texture
The repair itself is often easier than making it invisible. Matching the existing wall texture — whether it's smooth, orange peel, or knockdown — takes practice. And matching paint color on an older wall almost always requires repainting the entire wall or at least a large section.
